Do you know somebody who has a wonderful family , full of life and personality, but they have no family photos?!? Thank gosh you do! Now is your chance to nominate them to win some super awesome mega coolness! Write me at dave@dshillingphoto.com and tell me why this family deserves to have awesomness dripping from their walls! Little secret: I love pictures…especially family photos drawn by little kids…. just sayin ;)

Dont waste any more precious time! I will be announcing the winner on Christmas, so that gives you nominators 10 days to produce the family!!! If you are thinking that you want to nominate someone, but writing some big huge story is a hassle, dont fret!! Just send me a quick paragraph! It will only take you a couple minutes, and I’ll give the person who nominates the family a little gift as well!

The Cash and Prizes: One luck family will be chosen to receive up to 4 hours of … ME and MY CAMERA!!! You will also receive some prints at no cost, so we can clothe your naked walls with photos aplenty! I’ll toss in the digital files as well, that way the extended family that you email will have something to gush over!!!

If you are like me and you think that Giving is Awesome, then you absolutely need to check out www.givingisawesome.com. You can do a couple things there:

1. You can nominate a family who you feel is deserving of professional photography ( which is everyone ) but who could otherwise not afford it. You can search your address for photographers in your area, and email them for more info about their own individual details.
2. You can offer your photography services up in exchange for a warm smile and the satisfaction of knowing that there’s a family out there with photos to hang on their walls!

Whats great about this project is that it started out small-time, as a grassroots effort to help others. We owe that to Kristen Kalp, who is not only a talented a photographer, but a contributor to Totally Rad Actions, which are the best deal online for sweet Photoshop Actions.! Thanks Kristen for spreading the love!

Happy nominating!

So the other day, Jenny and I had a few hours without the kids, which rarely happens, and we were trying to figure out what to do with ourselves…we forgot what we used to before we were parents! We decided that all great missions begin at Starbucks… no seriously, they do. Nothing like some chocolately goodness to make you grab that net and catch that beautiful butterfly! We got our drinks and were met with disappointment soon after. Not because the drinks were bad ( ok mine wasn’t perfect), but because we passed by the toy collection box, and it had a lonely stuffed bear inside. Above the box were tags, and each tag represented one child… the tags were genius. They just had an age range, and boy or girl designations. Normally, this wouldn’t be too big of a deal, but the deadline for toy submission was that very same day! In not so many hours, someone will show up to collect a box containing all of ONE toy! Jenny picked up these tags, and her motherly instinct kicked in, because I could see that to her, each tag was not just a tag, but a child. Jenny is one mom who doesnt leave kids-anyone’s kids- behind. Needless to say, we had our mission!

We made a mental note of the age groups on the cards and headed out! We had fun picking out some gifts for children less fortunate than ours, and used the opportunity to teach our daughter about the importance of helping people and the impact that one gift can have on someones life. Kaitlyn was especially proud of herself for helping to pick out gifts for the kids, and she had just as much fun as we did! What really impressed us is that while we were out getting cute lil gifts for kids of all ages, she didn’t ask for a SINGLE toy for herself, and that is a difficult thing for a 7 year old to do…especially when she wanted some of those things for Christmas. I swelled with pride =)

Even baby Indiana helped!! He tested the baby toys for us to determine their “value”…based on his feedback, I imagine that the older kids can just give the babies all of the discarded boxes and paper, and everyone would be happy.

Thanks to Jan Strickland from Beverly’s Fabrics in Carmichael for making it so easy for us to help give more children a christmas than just our own!! Jan also hosts car shows with a one-toy entry fee… what an awesome lady! She distributes the toys to pediatric hospitals, Shelters, WEAVE, and others. If you are interested in making a child’s day, head to your local Starbucks and see if they are participating!
(We found many gifts that cost roughly the same as a Triple Venti Espresso Truffle with Whip).

Indiana turns 1!!

December 9, 2008

…and time has FLOWN by… My little man is all growm up! Well, not exactly. But I dont quite feel ready to say “toddler” yet. “Baby” will do just fine for now TYVM! Baby Indy completed his first year of life, is past the age for SIDS ( so we can stop checking if he’s breathing when he’s just sleeping peacefully), and took his first steps a week ago… its a big week for him! We got him a SWEET Indiana Jones cake, and the cake topper even had a Boulder that you could shoot out and it would roll after Indiana just like Temple of Doom. Spectacular. Its so cool that the misses let me name him Indiana, cause themed birthdays are super easy! (for the Indiana Jones fans out there, yes I AM aware that Indiana was the dogs name). When it came time for the main event, Indiana weighed in at a staggering 27 pounds 9 ounces, and 32 inches tall ( thank you 1 year well baby checkup!), and the cake weighed in at 6 ounces, and 5 inches tall. Lets just say Indy remains the undefeated champ of Heavyweight cake boxing.

“Guards, release the photos!”

Indy was giving away free tickets to the Gun Show!!!

His lady was impressed !

Is that not the coolest cake topper EVER?!?!?!

So Round One was pretty tame, but Indy got some bloodlust after the taste of frosting hit his lips….

"That" Parent

December 9, 2008

I’m sure you’ve all seen “that” parent… the one who was waaay to involved at their child’s sports function. I stand before you all and proudly declare that displays some that-parent-ness at my daughters ballet recital last weekend. I know you must be thinking… how could you possibly be “that parent” at a ballet recital? Its not like anyone getting tackled ( at least not planned)… well I wasn’t going to let that stop me. So I achieved this the only way I know how… I brought bags of photo gear, and setup light stands with wireless flash modules attached, making it completely clear that I was in no way planning on taking a subtle photo… oh no. I could go to McDonald’s and turn it into a photo shoot! My Peanut learned some new moves, and I wanted them lit up! In reality, it wasn’t that crazy, although my apologies go out to the other Dad who was videotaping…. I make a guest appearance in his home video about 15 minutes in, passing by to adjust the exposure =) .. You can count on one thing though… I’m doing it next time!

The baby was dying to show his ballet skills…. looked like crawling to me.
